How to bulk edit YouTube titles and descriptions
Old affiliate links, a renamed sponsor, a new social handle, a typo in the channel tagline: sooner or later every channel needs to change the same words on many videos. YouTube Studio has a bulk edit feature, but it is narrower than most people expect.
What YouTube Studio bulk edit can do
According to YouTube Help: Make bulk changes to videos, you can:
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and open Content.
- Tick the boxes next to the videos you want to change (or select all).
- Choose Edit and pick a field such as Title, Description, Tags, Visibility, Category or Comments.
- Enter the change and select Update videos.
For titles and descriptions the built-in options are to add text at the beginning, add text at the end, or replace the whole field. That covers a common case: appending the same footer to every description.
Where it falls short
- No find and replace inside text. You cannot change one link in the middle of a description and keep the rest.
- No per-video preview. You see the change you typed, not the resulting description for each video.
- No undo. Replacing descriptions on 200 videos cannot be reversed from Studio.
- No search inside descriptions. The Content filter searches titles and some metadata, so finding every video that contains an old link is hard.
Before you change anything: make a backup
Whatever method you use, save the current titles and descriptions first. Options:
- Copy them into a spreadsheet by hand for a small channel.
- Use the YouTube Data API (
videos.listwith the snippet part) to download them as JSON. - Use a tool that saves the previous wording automatically.
Method 1: Studio bulk edit for append or prepend
If you only need to add a line, for example a new link at the end of every description, Studio's built-in bulk edit is the simplest route. Test on two or three videos first, then run it on the rest.
Method 2: Edit one by one with a checklist
For fewer than about twenty videos, open each in Studio, use the browser's find (Ctrl+F) inside the description box to locate the old text, and replace it. Keep a list of video IDs and tick them off.
Method 3: YouTube Data API script
With a Google Cloud project and OAuth, a script can fetch each video's snippet, run a find and replace, and call videos.update. Two cautions: videos.update overwrites the whole snippet you send, so you must send back title, description, category and tags, not only the changed field; and each update costs API quota, so large channels may need several days.
Method 4: A bulk metadata editor extension
An extension can search across your videos' titles and descriptions, show a diff of every change, and apply it in a batch. Look for a preview diff, a saved copy of the previous wording, and no third-party server in the path.
Batchframe, our YouTube bulk metadata editor, works like that: search the channel, preview every edit as a diff, apply, and restore the previous wording from the same browser. It is awaiting Chrome Web Store review.
A safe workflow for any method
- Write down the exact old text and the exact new text, including spaces and punctuation.
- Back up the current titles and descriptions.
- Find every video that contains the old text.
- Apply the change to two or three videos and check them on the public watch page.
- Apply to the rest, then spot-check a few at random.
Common bulk edits worth doing
- Replace dead or changed affiliate links.
- Update social handles and website addresses.
- Add or fix a standard footer: credits, gear list, chapters note.
- Fix a recurring typo or brand spelling in titles.
- Add a missing translation of titles and descriptions for a second language audience.
Things to keep in mind
- Titles are limited to 100 characters (YouTube Help: Edit video settings).
- Large title changes on a successful video change what viewers see; test on a few first.
- Tags play a minimal role in discovery according to YouTube, so time is usually better spent on titles, descriptions and thumbnails. If you are refreshing old videos, consider new thumbnails too; see thumbnail size and safe areas.
Frequently asked questions
Can you bulk edit YouTube descriptions?
Yes. YouTube Studio lets you select videos and add text to the start or end of descriptions or replace them entirely. It does not offer find and replace inside the text.
How do I replace a link in all my YouTube descriptions?
Studio cannot replace part of a description. Use the YouTube Data API or a bulk editor extension with find and replace, and back up descriptions first.
Can I undo a bulk edit in YouTube Studio?
No built-in undo exists. Save the previous titles and descriptions before making changes.
