How to search and export your ChatGPT chat history

After a few months of daily use, a ChatGPT sidebar holds hundreds of conversations, and the one you need is never at the top. This guide covers the built-in search, the official data export, and how to search the exported files yourself.

Steps below follow the OpenAI Help Center articles as of 23 October 2026; menus can move, so check Exporting your ChatGPT history and data if something looks different.

Search your chats inside ChatGPT

ChatGPT has a search option in the sidebar on web, iOS and Android. It searches across chats, projects, images and documents, and has filters to narrow results by content type. Select a result to open it.

Tips for better results:

Export your full history

The export gives you a ZIP file with your chat history and other account data.

On the web

  1. Sign in to ChatGPT and open your profile menu.
  2. Select Settings, then Data controls.
  3. Under Export data, select Export, then Confirm export.

On iOS and Android

Open Settings from your profile, go to Data controls, choose Export data and confirm. If the app sends you to the web instead, complete the steps above in a browser signed in to the same account.

Downloading it

OpenAI sends an email (or SMS for phone-only accounts) when the export is ready. According to the Help Center it can take up to 7 days, and the download link expires 24 hours after you receive it. Download while signed in to the same account.

Who cannot self-export

Self-service export is available on Free, Go, Plus and Pro, and some Edu workspaces. It is not available in Business, Enterprise or ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces; ask your workspace owner instead.

What is in the export

The ZIP typically contains an HTML file that shows your conversations in a browser and a JSON file with the same conversations in machine-readable form. The HTML file can be large and slow to open if you have a long history.

Searching the exported files

A minimal Python example that lists conversation titles with dates:

import json, datetime
for c in json.load(open('conversations.json')):
    print(datetime.date.fromtimestamp(c['create_time']), c.get('title'))

Troubleshooting

Moving your history to another tool

People often export to keep a personal archive or to bring context into another assistant. Rather than importing everything, pick the handful of conversations that matter, copy the useful parts into a plain document, and keep that document as a reference. A curated summary is usually more useful than a full dump of hundreds of chats.

Keeping your history useful

Coming from Curiofy

We are building Recallframe, a small tool for searching and browsing your own AI chat history locally, by keyword and date, without uploading it anywhere. It is not released yet; in the meantime the steps above work with the official export. See our other guides.

How long does a ChatGPT export take?

OpenAI says exports can take up to 7 days, and the download link expires 24 hours after it arrives.
